From Bauhaus to the Seventies: When our Samoussin Fitzgerald Bridges the Gap

Spring is already well established, bringing with it renewal and inspiration. A beautiful symbolism to discuss our new Samoussin Fitzgerald, which also bridges two inspirations: the rigor of Bauhaus and the playfulness of the seventies. A story of encounters and influences that inspired us for this new spring-summer collection.

When we say Fitzgerald, we think Gatsby, Art Deco, feathers, glitter, and champagne. I think of Zelda and Scott in swimwear at the Villa Saint-Louis, which would become the charming Belle Rive hotel in Cap d’Antibes. I think of “Tender is the Night.” and the French riviera ‘s writters.

When a Revolutionary School Inspires the Seventies

When I discovered this fabric with geometric patterns for our new collection, I immediately thought of Bauhaus. These graphic shapes, these terracotta hues… While discussing it, we realized it was no coincidence that this design also reminded us of the 70s, which are making a big comeback in decoration.

Because yes, it was indeed Bauhaus, that revolutionary art school of the 1920s, which laid the foundations for design where function enhances form. The 70s reappropriated these codes by infusing them with warmth and fantasy.

At Aricomagic, we believe that the most beautiful creations are born from these dialogues between eras. Our Samoussin Fitzgerald, with its reversible fabric, perfectly illustrates this: it pays homage to both the mythical couple of the Roaring Twenties and this timeless design that spans decades.

Exclusively available today: the Samoussin Fitzgerald is available for pre-order on our website and will be officially launched on May 10th. A wonderful opportunity to treat yourself to this creation in advance, which we hope will naturally find its place in your moments of relaxation in the garden or at the beach, thus perpetuating the art of living so dear to Scott and Zelda.

A New Samoussin with a More Summery Style

It's also a way to pay tribute to Zelda, whose talents as a writer are often overlooked.

Our first collection was very focused on winter fabrics. There was a desire to have textiles that were very soft to the touch, which is why we primarily went with velvets. We were looking to create cozy reading moments by the fireplace.

We’re quite proud of the choices we made, in retrospect, as the textiles are still very trendy. We had bet on timelessness, and the gamble seems to have paid off.

A Highly Anticipated Summer Version

The demand for a summer version of the Samoussin book holder regularly came up in feedback from our customers and our network. Especially for a brand born under the sun of the Var region like ours.

This new fabric, with its geometric patterns inspired by Bauhaus, was an obvious choice. Its double-sided nature allows us to offer two versions to mix and match. This is what led us to choose the couple Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald. The idea of having two complicit authors for this model seemed perfectly appropriate. It’s also a way to pay tribute to Zelda, whose talents as a writer are often overlooked. I recommend the excellent series “Z: The Beginning of Everything” which puts her back at the center of the story as the author she was.

As for the feel, this time it’s a jacquard and not a terry cloth, even if visually, the texture might resemble it somewhat (that’s intentional).

At this stage, we haven’t managed to find truly elegant terry cloths, and aesthetics are an essential characteristic of the Samoussin for us. Moreover, terry cloths are often a bit “soft,” and we prefer to move towards fabrics that have more structure. Maybe next year…

As mentioned above, the choice of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald as inspiration is not random. Their life on the French Riviera, their taste for afternoons by the pool, and literary evenings in the open air perfectly embody the spirit we wanted to infuse into this summer version of the Samoussin.

Creating Your Reading Corner for the Beautiful Days

To accompany this new Samoussin, here are some arrangement suggestions that respect the seventies spirit while drawing inspiration from the rigor of Bauhaus:

The Key Elements

  • Furniture with clean lines that prioritizes comfort
  • Natural materials that develop a patina over time
  • Touches of bold colors typical of the 70s
  • Functional accessories that become decorative

The Art of Composition

The beauty of an outdoor reading space lies in its balance:

  • A play between shadow and light for optimal comfort
  • A mix of materials for more character
  • Colors in harmony with the surrounding nature
  • Stable surfaces for your books and refreshments

At aricomagic, we love seeing how influences naturally respond to each other. Spring reminds us that beauty often comes from balance: between shadow and light, between function and form, between tradition and modernity. This new Samoussin Fitzgerald embodies this search for harmony, uniting the heritage of Bauhaus with the warmth of the seventies, while responding to your desires for summer readings.
